Day 3: A Day of Rest

“I would rather own a little and see the world than own the world and see a little of it.”

Alexander Sattler

Today was a day of relaxation, taking it easy after a long day of travel. This is something we rarely have in our everyday life. We started with breakfast at 10a followed by yoga at noon. A delicious lunch with wine of course, then we were off for our first hike, just a short one, at Reserva Nacional Altos De Lircay. This is only about 2- 3 km from the Hosteria. Surprisingly the Reserve can get up to 6’ of snow in the winter, but they will get none at the Hosteria.

On the beginning of the hike we found our feet sinking into this soft deep dirt. Come to find out, it is volcanic ash; there are seven active volcanos in the area. We then came upon a large white rock. They have found holes within the rock, and it is believed in 500 AD the holes were used to bake bread inside them.

There were haunted, abandoned cabins. These cabins were knowingly built on Indian burial grounds. The Chileans say the earth either dislikes you and pushes you out, or it embraces you. Clearly, the earth did not like people building on sacred grounds, and pushed them out.

As we walked along the path, a bug caught our eye on the ground. Luckily none of us stepped on it, as we found out it is an endangered species…it will make you think twice before killing an insect the next time you are hiking.

This hike wasn’t difficult. Relatively flat, easy walking, just a few inclines. A nice way to ease us into hiking after such a long day of travel the previous day. At the end of the path we came to a small clearing. No guard rails, just a lookout point that didn’t seem all too sturdy. Down below you could hear a stream, but the brush was too thick to see it. According to Natalie, this is an area the locals come to in the summer to escape the city heat, much like Flagstaff in Arizona.

We later relaxed around the pool, drinking wine, then it was off to a restorative yoga session. I have never done one of before. It is all floor work, you hold each pose for 5 – 8 minutes, as spa music plays in the background, and essential oils are used to further enhance the experience, I think I may have fallen asleep. When I finally looked around the room everyone was sitting up, legs crossed on their mat…I was still in a fetal position.

We finished the night with a delicious dinner – fish was on the menu. Then we headed back to the yoga room to learn about, and make essential oils. A very relaxing day to start the vacation.
